We are Cata, Rich, and Deb, with experience in architecture, engineering, and biology. Like you, we fell in love with biomimicry. Our passion for creating a regenerative world led us to start individual biomimicry businesses. As we each built our brands, engaged interest, and launched our first projects, it all looked promising...
However, as an emerging field, biomimicry poses challenges in finding local collaborators. Like many of you, we navigated this journey largely on our own, balancing project quality with the time spent exploring natural models. While things appeared inspiring from the outside, we often felt isolated and overwhelmed.
It was indeed a hard and lonely process.
While the three of us each have unique strengths—some in research, others in visualization or communication—our weaknesses led to insecurities and feelings of imposter syndrome, which hindered our business growth.
We realized how we were missing collaboration within a diverse team, where we could harness each other's strengths to deliver exceptional results for our clients—just as we had during our biomimicry learning experience.
Thus, we decided to team up.

Catalina Bustillo
Catalina, born in Barranquilla, Colombia, was shaped by her upbringing on family farms, fostering a strong sense of respect and connection to nature. With over 20 years of business experience, she has been part of the biomimicry community since 2011, when she completed the Biomimicry Specialist Program. She is an architect with a Master of Science in Biomimicry from Arizona State University and a certified Biomimicry Professional (BPro).
In 2014 she founded Biomimesis Caribe to promote biomimicry in Spanish-speaking regions through education and consultancy. Her projects include translating the Biomimicry Resource Handbook into Spanish, initiating the Biomimicry in Schools Project, and developing tools for incorporating ecosystem services into design.
Catalina's work emphasizes the integration of design and business, leading to the creation of Sharing Nature's Genius. She focuses on strengthening the role of context in both nature and human design and improving the graphic communication of Nature's Design Lessons to facilitate their application in professional settings for innovative, regenerative designs.
Rich Altherr
Growing up amongst the woodlands of the Metro Detroit area, Rich became connected to the tranquility and fascination of nature. Additionally, his passion for automobiles led to his 15 years of experience in the automotive industry, specializing in chassis system design, development, and technical leadership. He holds a Master of Science in Biomimicry from Arizona State University and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan and is a certified Biomimicry Professional (BPro).
Rich founded Nature Comes Standard LLC to consult on sustainable and regenerative engineering within the mobility sector. His notable projects include work with Ford, FiatChrysler, Hyundai, and The Ray Highway.
Rich’s engineering expertise enhances Sharing Nature’s Genius mission, enabling technical professionals to apply Nature's Design Lessons to today’s challenges and effectively assist in regenerative engineering solutions.
Deb Bidwell
Deborah Bidwell has reconnected people to nature for over twenty years through innovative, high-impact biology and sustainability education. Deb is a Senior Instructor of Biology at the College of Charleston, co-founder of Sharing Nature’s Genius, founder of Chickadee Biomimicry, and mentor for Learn Biomimicry. With a BS in Biology, MS in Zoology, MS in Biomimicry, and Biomimicry Professional (BPro) certification, Deb’s expertise resides in translating biology for nature-inspired regenerative solutions, biomimicry for social innovation, and biomimicry education.
She’s coauthored several peer-reviewed research articles on the teaching and learning of biomimicry. Some of her recent biomimicry projects include The Nature of Trust, Nature Positive Practices, Biomimicry on The Ray, and Beloved Economies.
In the past five years, Deb’s biology and education expertise has enhanced the Pioneer Community and honed the Nature’s Design Lesson process at Sharing Nature’s Genius, facilitating deeper, more accurate, and more innovative translation from biological adaptations into regenerative design inspiration for real-world solutions.
